Introduction to Leicester

The city of Leicester has a population of over 300 000, large enough to make you feel part of a cosmopolitan and thriving community but retaining many of the characteristics of an historic market town. The 700-year-old market, one of the largest covered markets in Europe, is a great place to shop. It provides value for money on goods such as fruit and vegetables, clothes and bric-a-brac. The city centre was recently rated in an independent retail survey as one of the top 10 places to shop in the UK. The big name stores can be found in the Shires and Haymarket shopping centres and in Gallowtree Gate. The arcades of St Martin's Square, Silver Street and the Leicester Lanes offer an enticing variety of smaller and individual shops. Away from the centre, there are the boutiques of Allandale Road and a meeting of east with west on Belgrave Road's 'Golden Mile', so styled because of its many jewellery shops.

Leicester is now a thriving commercial centre but its origins date back to pre-Roman times. The settlement was developed by the Romans, and the Jewry Wall and its museum trace this history. Not far from this site is the castle, remnants of the town wall, and the Newarke Houses Museum, which explore the social aspects of Leicester's past. Nearer to the city centre is the cathedral and the medieval Guildhall. On New Walk, the eighteenth century walkway from the city centre to Victoria Park, you will find the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery,

There are over 30 000 Muslims living in Leicester making it one of the largest and most flourishing Muslim communities in UK. The majority of Muslims in Leicester are from an Indian background with a large number of these first moving to Africa then to the UK. There are also a number of Muslims from other countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Somalia and various Arab countries. The majority of the Muslims are situated in the Highfields and Evington area of the city, both within walking distance from the university. Within these areas all needs for Muslims are catered for ranging from Halal food to Islamic bookshops. There are over 20 mosques situated around the city with the majority being around Highfields and Evington.

Halal Food

A number of Halal food takeaways are situated close to the university on Evington Road. If you prefer restaurants instead then there is a varied choice around the city. These include Zaytoun, which is only a 10 minute walk from the university on Highfield Street (off London Road), Chilli 2 Night, a little further away on Melton Road. There are also Halal butchers on Evington Road as well as a number of groceries and other shops including the student favourite, the 24 hour shop. Similarly there are butchers and grocers situated more closely to university on St Stephens Road (off Evington Road).
