Muslims at the
University of Leicester are calling on people of all faiths to join them
for a national one-day fast for charity.
Muslims, who are fasting between dawn and dusk during the month of
Ramadhan, are urging others to abstain from food on November 11.
All money raised will go towards helping provide clean water, sanitation,
healthcare in developing countries, employment opportunities and other
charitable causes. Charities to benefit are Human Appeal International,
The Prince's Trust, Target 2015 and Cancer Research.
Ismail Patel, acting president of the University of Leicester Islamic
Society, said: "The initiative calls upon the British non-Muslim
community to take part in a one-day fast in Ramadan, alongside Muslims, to
raise money for those in need.
"All students and staff members are invited to join in and remember
people who are less fortunate.
"People of many different faiths and backgrounds will be taking part
to show that diverse communities can get together in an atmosphere of
mutual understanding and for a good cause.
Anybody who is willing and able can join the fast, for as long or as short
a period as they like. All that is required is to get sponsorship for
participating in the event."
Everyone who participates may attend the charity meal on the day to break
the fast. The meal is free.
