Muslim students in
Leicester will set out to demolish some of the myths which surround their
faith - by using graffiti.
The University of Leicester Islamic Society has organised a series of
events showcasing the religion's culture and history as part of Islamic
Awareness Week, which begins on Monday.
One of the highlights will be a display of modern Islamic Art by the
artist Muhammed Ali, who paints Arabic words in graffiti to symbolise the
1,400-year-old religion.
Mr Ali, who studied at De Montfort University, uses giant art boards for
his displays.
He said: "There is a fascinating link between graffiti and Islam.
"I use Arabic words like greeting, peace and goodwill to send the
correct message of Islam.
"People immediately jump to the wrong conclusions of Muslims and
through this we can teach the correct message."
This year's theme for Islamic Awareness Week will be Discover Islam.
There will be a series of talks about the basis of the religion, Prophet
Muhammad and the holy book called Koran. On Thursday, recently converted
Muslims will talk about why they chose to convert.
Ismail Patel, vice-president of the society, said: "This will be a
good way for people to learn about Islam and we will show the movie
Malcolm X as he was a Muslim and an icon for many."
Sana Ahsan, of the Islamic Society, said there was still a prejudice
towards Muslims, especially after 9/11.
She said: "People still have a negative viewpoint of Muslims and this
will give people an insight as to what the religion is really about."
The Rev Canon Dr Andrew Wingate, the Bishop of Leicester's interfaith
adviser, said: "Some media looks at Muslims in a negative way and
this will help people to see what Islam is really about."
